In Chinese medicine, seasonal allergies are considered a deficiency condition, which involves the Lungs, Spleen and Kidneys. Most people who suffer from seasonal allergies have weak defense mechanisms and deficient Lungs, which allow for the invasion of airborne particulate matter. Once this particulate matter enters into the Lungs it obstructs their ability to function properly, and can also block the meridians inhibiting the down bearing action of the Lungs. The Lung Qi becomes stagnant and can counterflow upwards causing a runny nose. If there is an accumulation of dampness and hidden phlegm (interstitial fluid), which most sufferers already have, this can also be carried up to the nose where it is either discharged or lodged causing nasal congestion.
In almost all cases, the Spleen is deficient due to bad diets (typical Western diet), stress, overthinking, worrying, or over-taxation / fatigue. These all damage the Spleen’s ability to transform & transport, which if damaged, leads to the accumulation of dampness and phlegm. When the Spleen is deficient, gut health declines, and it’s in the gut where are defense mechanism originates - ie. immune system. Another factor that plays a role in damaging the Spleen is the overuse of antibiotics, which are cold in nature. FYI – 90% of sinus infections are viral, so if your doctor tries to give you an antibiotic when you DO NOT have a BACTERIAL infection, tell them no, and find yourself a practitioner who knows what they’re doing. Antibiotics are wreaking havoc with people’s health.
The Kidney's role in allergies primarily has to do with Kidney Yang, which is responsible for warming. If there isn’t enough thermogenic heat to aid the Spleen with metabolic activities, this will contribute to a further breakdown of the system as a whole, because the organ systems are interdependent upon one another.
Acupuncture with Chinese herbs and dietary modifications are very effective in the treatment of allergies; and much safer than conventional treatments, that often include steroidal nasal sprays (bad stuff), and medications. Not only does Chinese medicine treat the symptoms, improving your quality of life, but it also treats the root of the problem by returning balance and functionality to the body's systems.
