During an acupuncture treatment when the practitioner inserts a needle into a point and manipulates it, usually the patient will feel one or more of a range of sensations; which are referred to as deqi. The different sensations that can be experienced are as follows: tingling, numbness, dull – achiness, heaviness, spreading, pressing, or an electric sensation. These tend to be the most commonly reported experiences while the needle is being manipulated. If a patient feels a sharp pain, this is not desired, and the acupuncturist should be advised so the needle can be re-adjusted for a more comfortable experience.
