Herbs have been used in Chinese culture for centuries, and have been the main oral drug that accompanies the modalities. Like food, herbs are categorized by their nature, taste, and furthermore, by the meridian that they affect. What is considered to be the first Chinese pharmacopeia in its entirety, the Shennong Bencaojing (Classic of Herbal Medicine), was composed between the 1st and 2nd century BCE.
Herbs continue to play an important role in the treatment of diseases and illnesses both as a treatment on its own, and more often, with other treatment modalities like acupuncture.
