There are two main types of Chinese exercise, tai chi and qi gong. Tai qi is an internal martial art that promotes health, longevity, balance and agility. Its movements are slow and involve controlled breathing.
Qi gong, the exercise that will be the main focus of this section, started out as a dance 10,000 years ago. By the third century BCE qi gong was the main practice in medicine, meditation, and martial arts. The first documentation of qi gong occurred in 4,000 year old texts, which talked about a dance combined with breathing and rhythmical movements that was performed in the basin of the yellow river in Northern China. This dance was performed to drive out dampness from the tissues, muscles, and joints.
